WINE CELLAR CONVERSION AT A HISTORIC HOUSE

MJ Rooney undertook a sophisticated basement project beneath a historic manor in Kent, transforming it into an elegant wine cellar with brick vaulted ceilings. The conversion process began with precise underpinning, involving sequentially excavated shafts under the original foundations, reinforced with solid mass concrete to support the large footings of the manor. We then excavated the space for the cellar, creating an extensive area beneath the entrance hall.

Using advanced 3D modelling, we meticulously planned every aspect of the build, addressing issues in structural steel design, groundworks, and health & safety. This approach ensured minimal structural movement. The result is a spacious, temperature-controlled wine cellar featuring custom display cabinets and a central glazed tasting room.

Historical accuracy was achieved with original bricks and lime mortar for the vaulted ceiling, complemented by a comprehensive waterproofing system. This approach maintains a completely dry environment, which is essential for preserving the wine collection.
